ok, this is about to be long. but we're really fired up. first, here are some resources that might help you understand more about the midterm elections:
WHY WE CARE
if you're like us - and you probably are if you're reading this - you feel outraged and disgusted at the direction of this country. you've been feeling this way for a while.
the midterms are coming up quick and historically have a very low voter turnout - ESPECIALLY with young voters. please, please, PLEASE, do not let frustration and anger give way to hopelessness. you have power. you have a voice. use it.
the 2018 midterms are enormously important in shaping not only the future of trump's presidency, but in shaping the political landscape for years to come. control of state houses, the US house of representatives, and the senate are at stake.
the republican party promotes policies that heighten racial and economic injustices and encourage social division. republicans have pushed to take away health insurance from over 20 million americans; unjustly appointed two supreme court judges who can do things like overturn roe v. wade and gamble v. U.S.; cruelly separated children and families who have lived here their entire lives; and continued to favor unfair gerrymandering laws (which are re-evaluated following the 2020 census, cementing any gerrymandered districts until 2030). with the republicans in control of all three branches of government, they can make an attempt to repeal Obamacare, make cuts to welfare, medicare, food stamps, and social security and shut down the mueller investigation for good.
if democrats win, they can kill the republican legislative agenda in congress; gain power to investigate the corrupt trump administration; win power over the 2021 redistricting process and work to eliminate gerrymandering; raise the minimum wage to a living wage; pass automatic voter registration; and continue to protect a woman's right to choose. if democrats gain control of the house or senate in 2018, then republicans will lose their ability to send bills through to trump's desk with only republican votes.
the midterm elections also see more diversity than ever before. three states will have the opportunity to elect their first african american governors -
Ben Jealous of Maryland,
Stacey Abrams of Georgia,
and Andrew Gillum of Florida.
amidst trump's disgusting Islamophobic slurs and policies, Rashida Tlaib, the daughter of Palestinian immigrants is running for congress in Michigan, and Ilhan Omar, a Somali-American who fled the Somali civil war is running in Minnesota.
on top of that, a record 257 women are running for house and senate this fall - and more women have won house primaries than any year before!
the prospect of more inclusion of women and people of color in a congress that has been historically dominated by white christian men is not only symbolic, but also stands to change the tone of american politics.
not to be hyperbolic, but the future of our country relies on voters. a democratic win at the upcoming midterm elections could upset trump's bid for re-election in 2020.
vote midterms. save america.
